The moral of the story is if you want real change in your career don’t ask your friends for advice (... unless they know the difference between an americano vs. a drip coffee).

When we’re in the middle of a career transition, we want to do all of the things (scrolling, cleaning, complaining, etc.) that are easy because taking the time to focus on our job search (after finishing our day-job) is tiresome.

And fcking lonely.

We don't focus on THE one thing so we end up focusing on too many things.

One week before I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, and 16 weeks after my second miscarriage, I was transferred internally from my recruiter role to a program manager role.

I had not asked for this nor wanted this to happen.

Recruiting is what I loved doing. I was good at it and I wanted to continue doing it.

I quit my job at Polaroid in Minneapolis to volunteer in Peru at a microfinance bank for a year in 2008. I had always dreamed of moving to a Spanish speaking country and this was my chance.

I had also just been turned down for a Fellowship at Kiva and was feeling all kinds of Imposter Syndrome, unworthiness, desperation and impatience.

Well, I have some news for you…

Resumes are not easy.

They, like burpees, are easy when you lay the groundwork beforehand which sadly, most people skip.

I was constantly going through the list of all the things that needed to be done tomorrow that I didn’t finish today.

I started coaching full-time last year because I wasn’t ready to leave my daughter for a job where I wasn't 100% committed.

The work I get to do every single day fills me with deep passion and I’m so grateful you are here with me.

Dreaming and thinking about our ideal situation is a luxury.

Sometimes you feel like you’re just trying to get by, and you’re in a pandemic, and it feels luxurious to dream of anything besides our current circumstances.

The truth is, once you have chosen a job only for money you tend to stop dreaming big.

Well, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret 🤫 that we all forget when we’re in the weeds about any new goal we want to accomplish.

My whole life I’ve been telling myself a lie, there’s only one recipe to follow when it comes to making cookies. The cookies that I made with the baking powder “incorrectly” were actually WAY better than when I made them with the baking soda.

Why am I telling you this?

Because a lot of times we are thinking we’re doing something wrong when it actually could be better if we tried something different.
